Job description:

  • supporting various scientific projects with data analysis and computation tasks
  • scripting geo-processing routines to develop and analyse large spatiotemporal datasets
  • handling of diverse datasets in the 100s of GBs to TBs dimension, ranging from global high resolution time-series of raster layers derived from remote-sensing (e.g. land-cover/-use, climate, biodiversity) to large socioeconomic databases
  • contributing to the dissemination of project results via journal publications, media presentations, etc.
  • fostering knowledge transfers within the group, e.g. by designing and annotating code for easy re-usability or through occasional informal workshops

Job description:

  • carrying out empirical research on patterns and drivers of recent global LULCC, by employing cutting-edge statistical
    tools to analyse large spatiotemporal datasets
  • targeted work aims at quantifying generalities, scale-dependencies, and possible systemic changes in the relationships
    between LULCC and selected drivers
  • developing time-series for selected LULCC drivers, complementary with recently developed global gridded time-series of various land-cover/land-use variables
  • setting up and annotating analysis scripts within a longer-lasting infrastructure for global land-use analysis

New post-doc position on the Fireflies project

In this role you will lead the technical development and production of a system for detecting post-fire recruitment failure remotely, using input from earth observation imagery and field observations. In collaboration with a Research Associate based in Durham you will publish your outcomes in peer-reviewed journals of international standing.  You will represent the University of Leicester at international project meetings and presenting your progress of the research to international project partners, presenting your findings at academic and professional conferences.

This is a Full time, fixed term contract to 31 December 2019.

Associate Professor / Professor in Geospatial Engineering

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW is seeking to appoint an outstanding academic to conduct high impact research, deliver outstanding teaching and student experience, build industry engagement, and demonstrate leadership in the field of Geospatial Engineering. The appointee will join an existing, dynamic discipline group with a strong research focus. Exceptional candidates with expertise in any of the Geospatial Engineering sub-disciplines – surveying, geodesy, remote sensing, navigation, photogrammetry or mapping – are encouraged to apply. The appointee will be expected to foster links between one or more of the Geospatial Engineering and Civil and/or Environmental Engineering sub-disciplines, as well as to collaborate with other UNSW groups conducting geospatial research or education. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognised research program, and to participate in the teaching and service missions of the School and Faculty.

Ecosystems Support Officer

The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) is the statutory adviser to the UK Government and Devolved Administrations on UK and international nature conservation. One of JNCC’s key roles is provision of evidence on biodiversity and ecosystems. JNCC are looking to recruit a full time Ecosystems Support Officer based in Peterborough. This is a 2 year fixed term appointment.

The Ecosystem Support Officer will work in the Ecosystem Analysis team. This technical team coordinates a range of National Species Monitoring Schemes and delivers analytical work using modelling and earth observation methods. The post holder will work across an interesting range of projects both within the UK and internationally, including across the UK Overseas Territories.

The position advertised would require someone with strong GIS skills to support the management and analysis of a variety of spatial data sources, from species samples to earth observation data. Ideally, candidates will have broad relevant ecological knowledge.

Integrated System for 3D Optimisation of Construction Site Layout Planning

Construction site layout planning is a complex problem and greatly affects project cost, construction safety, and overall productivity. Frequent changes and dynamic work environments on construction sites impose a need to develop an automated approach to capture the 3D site layout. This project exploits the recent technological advancement on using laser scanning and 3D-photogrammetry to extract data in a form of point cloud, and aims to streamline the site planning process by developing interactive 3D geometrical models. Space optimisation mechanism and rule-based criteria are integrated with the 3D models to provide an efficient and cost-effective approach for construction site planning.

The ideal candidate for this project would have a degree in construction management / architecture / engineering / computer science and with relevant experience on programming, 3D modelling and developing optimisation mechanism. Additional skills and experience on developing algorithm of computational geometry, knowledge on geo-space standard, BIM, IFC, GIS standard, CityGML, are desirable. The candidate should also satisfy the usual entry requirement of PhD degree at UNSW.

Fusion of Earth Observation data and 3D city models

Many Earth observation platforms (drones, micro-satellites) have become inexpensive, recording massive amounts of data via thermal, colour, infrared, and radar cameras for different applications, such as urban planning, vegetation dynamics monitoring, and natural hazard monitoring. Living in the age of big remote sensing data, currently we face challenges in managing, processing, and efficiently exploiting these data for socio-economic and environmental applications. This project will develop novel 3D data fusion modelling using voxels for context-based, automated information processing and extraction from large databases of disparate remote sensing imagery to bring new perspectives on phenomenon understanding and prediction.

The candidate must have a background in Geomatics with a strong interest in image analysis, OR a background in computer vision with a strong interest in 3D spatial information. In both cases, the candidate should have good programming skills, competence in 3D modelling and spatial analysis, understanding of machine learning, and fascination for Earth science applications.
